Why Interlocking Driveways Are Not A DIY Project

Why-Interlocking-Driveways-Are-Not-A-DIY-Project

Interlocking driveways are not only aesthetically pleasing but also have several benefits such as long durability, reduced water runoff and a longer lifespan. If you are tired of your shabby concrete driveway that needs maintenance after every few months, interlocking driveways are the way to go.

At this point, it is imperative to understand that interlocking stones, as simple as it may seem, is not something you can DIY. It requires proper planning and execution to ensure you can enjoy all the benefits.

As landscaping contractors, we have come across many individuals who think that interlocking driveways are something that they can DIY on their days off. However, this is not recommended at all.

If you do not have professional experience in interlocking stones, DIYing the process will only lead to more money spent and more issues.

In this blog, we have explained why interlocking driveways are not a DIY project and why should you always hire a professional landscape contractor.

Interlocking Driveways Require Extensive Planning

Whether you are interlocking a driveway or a patio, the process requires extensive planning to produce a well-thought-out design. In addition to the aesthetics, the functionality of the driveway has to also be considered.

Professional landscape contractors design the layout based on the soil of the driveway, the stone that you choose as well as the climate conditions of the area. Stacking the stones back to back is a part of the process, not the whole process.

Of the many locations where Burloak Landscaping provides its services, conditions like freezing and thawing also have to be factored into the planning.

While planning the driveway, short-term and long-term plans are also factored in. We keep in mind how the driveway will look in the next five to ten years and in case you decide that you want to make modifications in the future.

During the planning phase, we also take precise measurements to calculate how many stones it will take to prepare the driveway and what other materials will be required.

Preparation Of The Land

In addition to planning the interlocking driveway, the preparation of the land also plays a very important role in the execution. Before laying the interlocking stones, we conduct a soil test and create a foundation.

The process of creating a foundation has to be done precisely. If not done properly, the area can shift due to ground movement, the erosion of soil or creation of water pockets.

As experts in the field, we believe that laying the foundation is the most important part of designing an interlocking driveway.

The process involves digging up the land. The depth is decided based on the soil and the climatic conditions of the area. Normally, the depth is kept between four to six inches.

Another thing that is taken into consideration when laying the foundation is the slope of the driveway. If the driveway does not have a gradient, a slight slope (1 inch per 4 feet) is added for water drainage.

After this, the soil is compacted using special compacting machines. This is extremely important since loose soil can disrupt the installation of interlocking stones and will also adversely affect the durability of the structure.

Constructing The Borders

Once the foundation is laid, interlocking the stones is a relatively straightforward process. However, while installing the stones, special care must be taken so that each stone is able to sit securely with the other. For this, some stones might have to be cut using a high-quality paver saw. If you use any other saw, you might end up breaking the stone.

Lastly, borders are laid to ensure the stones do not move or get displaced due to the elements of nature or the weight of cars. Stones are often used as edging materials but some landscape contractors may also use metal or plastic edging.

The process of laying interlocking driveways is rather technical and requires skill. Hence, it is always better to hire a professional landscape contractor instead of trying to do it yourself.
